Enrolment in year 1
private, church and alternative schools
When enrolment is, how the school selects first-graders, what tuition costs and whether it has its own nursery. Every fact with a source and check date; if we don’t know, we say so.
How enrolment works
All dates- Statutory period: 15 January to 15 February. Since September 2025 enrolment for compulsory schooling falls in this period (Education Act s. 36(4)). Each school, private and church ones included, sets its own day and time. Source: Ministry of Education · checked 23 Oct 2026
- Private and alternative schools often have their own admission steps. An interview or visit, a trial day, a lottery or first come first served, priority for siblings or children from the school’s own nursery. Each school page shows its rules under “Years 1–5 and enrolment in year 1”.
- Open days and trial school days usually come earlier. In autumn and winter; save them to your calendar under Dates.
- Deferral of compulsory schooling is requested at enrolment. The Ministry describes the conditions and required recommendations on its enrolment page.
77 of 364 schools have published their 2027/28 enrolment date so far; for another 40 we only show last year’s date (marked “last year”). 124 schools document their own nursery.
